Now, after the excitement has settled some of you that have graduated college are wondering what's next? You may not have secured that first job in your field yet so you're slightly worried. Or maybe you've graduated last year and you're still not seeing the doors of a career opening up.
I want to remind you to stay patient!
I know it sounds easier said than done but believe me, I know just how hard the journey is! After my college graduation in July 2012 I continued working at my college job (Sonic Drive-In). I'd been working there for nearly 5 years and after graduation it was the last place I wanted to be. Instead I wanted my career as a reporter to start. After all, I'd worked so hard to earn my degree. Not to mention, student loans that were awaiting me. My desires weren't God's plans. He knew and I knew that I had bills and it was pointless to move home as most college graduates do. I knew I wouldn't work in fast-food forever. In fact I had great faith as the end of the year approached God would bless me with what I'd waited patiently for. With that said, for 5 months, I applied to jobs every single day after taking off my apron or even on my breaks. I was completely determined. That determination, paid off as I got my first job after college in January 2013.
I said all of that to again remind you to be patient!
A few tips that I'd like to share with you from myself and other professionals that I know are:
If you're reading this and you're in the journalism field, hoping to get a job as a reporter, don't limit yourself to jobs in production or producing. Both of these give you a chance to learn from others and strengthen your skills. No matter what career you desire, being open to other options in that field is a must! You never know what you can be led to with that opportunity. Assuming your work ethic, you may be promoted or transition into the job of your choice.
Network! Keep up with contacts from internships and utilize LinkedIn to the fullest.
If you're bummed about a job you interviewed for and didn't get- Follow-up with the interviewer in an email to inquire of how you can improve. Most young people won't do this. Stand out! Show them you aren't afraid to take constructive criticism, to make room for growth. This is also a way for that employer to remember you, if you apply again.
Volunteer. Graduation may be over but its still time to get to work while waiting on that first job. Volunteering looks great on your resume. Also, intern again. It may not be for a grade but again it strengthens your skills, connects you to more contacts, and its part of your resume.
I did an extra internship before I graduated and it was the best decision ever. I didn't mind driving an hour 5 days a week to learn more and prepare myself for the future. I was driven to receive what God had for me and I want you to be also. No matter what field you're in, all of the above applies to you. Remember the word tells us, "Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in forced labor."~Proverbs 12:24.
With that said, there's work to be done, So lets go ladies!
